With all the developments in the fixed wireless space, vendors are turning to different standards on which they base their equipment on. 4G/5G, WiFi, proprietary standards and DOCSIS.

As 5G/4G and WiFi are getting a lot of media coverage we wanted to show what wireless DOCSIS can do and what the advantages are a bit more up close.

The network topology of DOCSIS Wireless systems is a copy paste of a cable network except that coaxial cables, the physical layer, are replaced by wireless technology.

A DOCSIS network comprises of a CMTS, Cable Modem Termination System on the operator side and a Cable Modem on the customer`s side.

Globtel AIR Gigaray supports three different types of network topology. Two are CMTS vendor neutral and work with Harmonic CableOS, Arris, Casa or Cisco. The topology requires a CMTS at the tower site or a remote PHY unite at the tower site with schematics below:

The third option, developed in cooperation with Harmonic is an integrated remote PHY unit into the sector antennas itself which eliminates the need for air-conditioned indoor rooms at the tower site and has a smaller footprint and smaller power consumption.

On the customer premises side, there is an indoor and an outdoor unit which are connected via coaxial cable. The indoor unit is a standard cable modem available on the open market while the outdoor unit is a two-way transceiver. The topology at the customer premises is standard cable as seen below:

As an example of an outdoor CPE:

There are many differentiators between non-DOCSIS wireless solutions and DOCSIS but the most important ones are:

  • DOCSIS supports modulations of up to QAM 4096 – depending on spectrum
  • DOCSIS supports adaptive modulation
  • At minimum QAM16 which allows for 1 Gbps to the end user throughout the coverage area
  • Supports any service normally seen on wired networks, TV in IPTV or DVB, VoIP, Home Surveillance etc. etc. Basically, no limitations in regard to services in any kid or form
  • DOCSIS has its own frequencies and wireless DOCSIS is based on frequency up conversion and down conversion and as such can support virtually any type of spectrum

With the above facts, the Globtel AIR Gigaray solution has significant upper hand in capacities, ranges and frequencies supported.

Spectrum, supported via Globtel AIR Gigaray with maximum capacities and ranges can be seen in the below table:

Maximum capacity to the end user is 2 Gbps in the downstream and 1 Gbps in the upstream. As such it is highly competitive with any other wireless technology while significantly more cost efficient than anything wired and highly competitive with anything wireless.
